ABOUT NLA
History of Lottery in Ghana
The history of lottery in Ghana can be traced to 1958 when the then Department of National Lotteries (DNL) was established under the National Weekly Lotto Act, 1961 (ACT 94) as a Department under the Ministry of Finance to organize raffles for the public to have fun and win prizes.
Introduction of the 5/90 Fixed-Odds Game
The DNL's first Director, Mr. Francis William Brennan, a Maltese national, introduced the first fixed-odds lottery in Ghana. This game was known as the 5/90 fixed-odds game because it involved picking five winning numbers out of 90. The first draw was conducted on September 29, 1962.
Manual Lotto Coupons and Draws
The lotto coupons used then were popularly referred to as “Manual” because lotto receivers who retailed the lottery products physically wrote the numbers chosen by customers on the coupons. The duplicates were submitted to the lottery Authority before the draw was held. Winners of the draw were selected manually by DNL staff from the stocks of lotto coupons sold.
Establishment of the National Lottery Authority
With the passage of the National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 722), the Department of National Lotteries (DNL) gained autonomy. It became known as the National Lottery Authority (NLA), with a sole mandate to regulate, supervise, conduct, and manage the National Lotto and to provide for related matters. Section 2(4) of Act 722 also empowers NLA to operate Games of Chance and Lottery.
Automation of NLA Operations
After the transition, NLA automated its operations by introducing Point of Sale Terminals (POSTs) or automated machines that generate real-time lottery tickets upon purchase on two back-end support system platforms, LOTs Ghana Ltd. and SIMNET Ghana Limited.
NLA's Lottery Products
NLA also operates the 5/90 Fixed Odds Game, which has seven different branded products: Monday Special, Lucky Tuesday, Midweek, Fortune Thursday, Friday Bonanza, its flagship product, National Weekly Lotto and the Sunday Aseda Draw. The Authority also operates the NoonRush and VAG Lotto Games.
